The Orient Expressed: Japan’s Influence on Western Art, 1854-1918
October 5, 2011 | January 15, 2012

The Orient Expressed focuses on the worldwide phenomenon known as Japonisme, which permeated art and culture in the West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Organized by the Mississippi Museum of Art and curated by Gabriel P. Weisberg, PhD, professor of art history at the University of Minnesota, this traveling exhibition brings more than 150 objects, including ceramics, drawings, glass, paintings, prints, and silver, to San Antonio, demonstrating the pervasive fascination with Japanese style.

November Meeting Notes

Members at our November general meeting accepted a by-law change and Executive Board . New board is made up of the following volunteers:

President: Mary Campos Lopez
Vice-president: Irene Taylor
Secretary: Roger Snyder
Treasurer: Charles Krause

We also had a wonderful Clouds and Sky demo by Regina Calton Burchett from Manchaca, Texas. Regina likes to work on Pastelboard and uses an alcohol wash after sketching and applying the first layer of pastel.  She demonstrated different kinds of clouds and then worked on a painting in progress.  It was a very well thought out demo, taking the time to explain each step and answer our questions.

Thanks, Regina, for a great demo!
